I just got home from the Apple Store Clone (aka the Microsoft Store) and was able to experience it. I was not surprised on how much it copied Apple. I actually got a PC Specialist to talk me out of the Zune. He uses the iPod!
Anyway, after waiting in a long line, I was finally able to try out the Microsoft Surface. I was expecting more (I don’t know why – it’s Microsoft). When you first touch the surface, you are greeted with a menu of options. You can play board games such as chess and checkers, look at your photos, or doodle.
First, I tried the photo option. Honestly, I was quite impressed. You can pinch the photos and they will get bigger or smaller. The Surface also has support for videos. You can resize the videos as well. It also allows you to drag the pictures into a ‘group’ and categorize them. The irony is that it only provides like 5 categories and you can’t create any more.
Next, I played with the doodle app. You can change the color with a ‘paint jar’ at the bottom. With your finger, touch anywhere and it will paint. Make sure before you use this that you have a lot of backup patience. The touch takes very long to respond. Also, the ‘touch screen’ is not very sensitive. You have to touch very hard for it to respond.
As far as the board games go, I was quite happy. I decided to play checkers and had a lot of fun. I’m not very good at the game, so it gives you hints (if you can figure out how to turn that feature on) on where to place your game piece. I ended up getting bored and sized the checkerboard down very small, got all my pieces out and started playing checker war with my pieces. It was fun.
In conclusion, the Microsoft Surface is just okay, it needs some improvements. Right now it is available for business for $15,000 to $30,000. I would never pay that much for that. Just my opinion.
